Call to Order

At 5:53 p.m., Chair Kenneth Lanier welcomed all and called the Budget Work Session of the Pender County Board of Education to order.

Budget Work Session

Dr. Steven Hill discussed the budgetary needs to launch STEM Expeditions at West Pender Middle School. The program, which will cost about $180,000, will allow students to explore career pathways in middle school and be used as a training center for all middle schools.

Next, Dr. Todd Blumenreich and Dr. Hill reviewed the 2018-19 Proposed Local Budget Request.

Mr. George recalled the Board of Education was told when the water tower was placed on the property at Malpass Corner Elementary that the school would be hooked up to county water, and that has not yet occurred. Staff will look for this in previous Board minutes.

Mr. George also questioned the need for a generator capacity as large as the requested generator.

Mr. Lanier asked that staff address need for school nurses, how they are funded, as well as the salary schedule for nurses.

Mr. Lanier will contact the Board of County Commissioners to arrange a joint work session to discuss the local budget request.

In a motion made by Rochelle Whiteside, seconded by Don Hall, the Board adjourned its meeting at 8:51 p.m.
