Call to Order

At 4:30 p.m., Chair Kenneth Lanier welcomed all and called the regular meeting of the Pender County Board of Education to order after determining a quorum was present.

Bond Update

Allen Vann introduced Matt Temple, project manager with Metcon Construction. Mr. Temple shared an update on the Penderlea School project, stating the project is on schedule to be complete in time for the delivery of furniture and the return of staff and students.

Arthur Vanderaa, project manager of the Surf City Elementary and Surf City Middle project, provided an update on the construction progress. Mr. Vanderaa said the project is 77.5 percent complete.

Larry Bergman, Surf City Town Manager, provided an update on the progress of water and sewer. Mr. Bergman said the contractor began water and sewer in February and the contractor feels confident the water line will be ready for testing mid-May and the sewer line will be ready for testing by the end of May. The Town of Surf City has agreed to help with a temporary Certificate of Occupancy for the project if needed and to coordinate pump and haul with the district should the sewer line not be complete on time.


Dr. Hill asked the Board to consider a date to meet for a budget work session. The Board agreed to meet at 6 p.m. April 3 and to hold April 4 as well should it be needed.

2018-19 Student Reassignment Requests

The Board reviewed Student Reassignment Requests for the Topsail Area Schools. 143 students have requested reassignment to stay at their current school in the 2018-19 school year.


In a motion made by Rochelle Whiteside, seconded by Brad George, the Board adjourned its meeting at 5:28 p.m.
