Call to Order

At 4:01 p.m., Board Chair Kenneth Lanier called the work session to order.

Transportation Director Darren LaFon shared two plans for student reassignment.

Board members reviewed projected enrollments for Topsail Elementary, North Topsail Elementary, South Topsail Elementary, Topsail Middle, Topsail High, and the Surf City area elementary and middle school projects. The Board also compared and discussed various reassignment area options presented by Mr. LaFon.

Mr. George said he was in favor of the first option presented, which included a clean feeder pattern. He suggested one revision to include all of Olde Point in the Topsail Elementary school district.

The Board agreed to focus the reassignment on creating an assignment area for the Surf City area schools. Mr. Lanier directed Mr. LaFon to proceed with the clean feeder pattern and to adjust the line as recommended by Mr. George. Mr. LaFon will bring the draft reassignment plan back to the Board in November.

Mr. Lanier recommended having two public input sessions for the reassignment at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 at South Topsail Elementary and Dec. 5 at North Topsail Elementary.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., in a motion made by Rochelle Whiteside, seconded by Brad George, the Board adjourned its work session.
