Call to Order

At 4:30 p.m., Chair Kenneth Lanier welcomed all and called the special meeting of the Pender County Board of Education to order after determining a quorum was present.   The group recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Vice Chair Don Hall delivered a prayer.

Closed Session

At 4:32 p.m., Brad George motioned to move into closed session for confidential personnel  matters pursuant to G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1) and (a)(6) to prevent the disclosure of confidential personnel files under G.S. 115C-319,  and to consider matters relating to initial employment of an individual employee.  Katherine Herring seconded the motion and it carried.

Open Session and Approval and Announcement of the Superintendent

At 5:10 p.m., Rochelle Whiteside motioned to move back into open session.  Brad George seconded and it was unanimous.  Next Brad George motioned to elect Dr. W. Steven Hill as the new Superintendent of the Pender County Schools, under the terms and conditions set forth in the contract prepared by the Board’s attorney.  Rochelle Whiteside seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously.  Board Chair Kenneth I. Lanier announced effective October 1, 2017, Dr. W. Steven Hill will be the Superintendent for Pender County Schools.

Comments from the Board Members

Board Member Rochelle Whiteside welcomed Dr. Hill and announced she was very excited.  Board Member Brad George welcomed Dr. Hill and advised he was extremely impressed with him.  Board Member Katherine Herring also welcomed Dr. Hill and Vice Chair Hall greeted Dr. Hill and welcomed him to Pender County. 

Comments from the Superintendent

Dr. Cobb graciously congratulated Dr. Hill.  She welcomed him and advised he was coming to a great school system and a wonderful community.  Dr. Hill announced he was humbled and appreciative.  He is looking forward to getting involved.


Upon a motion made by Rochelle Whiteside, seconded by Katherine Herring, the Board adjourned its meeting.
