7401-R R&P for requesting reimbursement for CDL License Requirement

Certain positions in Pender County Schools require the employee to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements specific to those positions. This R & P is for the purpose of establishing the process for employees of PCS to be reimbursed for the expense of obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements as required for their employment. This includes but is not limited to; Bus Drivers, Substitute Bus Drivers, Instructional Assistants, Transportation Staff, Maintenance Staff and Certified Staff that may be asked or required to drive a yellow bus route.

1. The initial cost of the CDL and endorsements will be reimbursed to the employee upon obtaining their CDL and accompanying endorsements. Reimbursement will occur as a separate payment at the time the employee receives their first paycheck from PCS provided they have turned in their receipt from DMV two weeks prior to the date of their first check. Employees turning in their receipt after that time will be reimbursed with their second paycheck.

2. The cost of Renewal of a current employees CDL and accompanying endorsements will be done in the same way as the initial cost. The employee will be reimbursed with the first paycheck following their renewal provided they turn in their receipt two weeks prior to the issue date of that paycheck. Employees turning in their receipt after that time will be reimbursed with their second paycheck. NOTE: Reimbursement for renewals covers the cost of the employees CDL and endorsements only. The cost of their regular Driver’s License remains the responsibility of the employee.

3. Employees whose employment with PCS ends for any reason within six months of their start date will be required to pay back the cost of their reimbursement. This cost may be withheld from their final paycheck if necessary.
