4234 R&P Cimex lectularius (bed bugs)

  1. If a suspected bed bug is found on a child’s clothing or in a school:

a.    Notify the parent/guardian.

b.    Temporarily remove the student from the classroom so that the school nurse or a qualified individual can perform an inspection of the student’s clothing and other belongings.

c.    Make the best effort to collect a specimen without crushing the bug(s).

d.    Place the specimen securely on a piece of clear tape or in a re-sealable plastic bag.

e.    Pictures cannot be used to identify a suspected bed bug- only actual specimens can be analyzed.

  1. If necessary, consult with the Environmental Specialists at the Pender County Health Department to assist with identification of specimens.
  2. If there is a positive identification, the following steps will be taken:

a.    Do not send the student home.

b.    Provide the student with temporary clothing and shoes and place all of their clothes and shoes in a dryer and operate the dryer on high for 30 minutes.

c.    Remaining belongings should be sealed in a large plastic bag.

d.    After drying, the student should change back into their clothes and shoes and return to class.

e.    Reduce the number of items that the student has to transport between school and home.

f.     Regularly inspect the student’s desk(s) and locker/storage space for any possible specimens.

  1. Conduct an inspection of the student’s classroom(s). If no other specimens are found, it is not necessary to vacate the space.
  2. If bed bugs are found in a classroom, notify the school custodial contractor and the district maintenance office. The classroom will be thoroughly vacuumed and the vacuum bag will be removed and disposed of immediately after use.  Any rugs than cannot be vacuumed should be removed. Hard surfaces should be cleaned with hot soapy water.
  3. The affected classroom(s) should be thoroughly vacuumed every day until Pender County Schools receives documentation that the infestation of the home has been eliminated.
  4. Consult with the Pender County Department of Social Services as need for family support.
