Call to Order

At 6:03 p.m., Chair Kenneth Lanier welcomed all and called the community meeting of the Pender County Board of Education to order.

Presentation

Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill welcomed community members and presented options for the Penderlea School facility campus. Dr. Hill discussed athletic facilities that would be possible with the media center remaining on the campus, as well as if it was demolished with the rest of the school building. He also spoke of the financial implications of keeping the building and the cost of demolition. Dr. Hill asked those in attendance to be thinking about partnerships that would allow for the current school’s gym and auditorium to be kept up with and utilized.

Public Comment

Next, Chair Kenneth Lanier opened the floor for public comment.

  • Toni Giddeons, of Wallace, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.
  • Red Robbins, of Burgaw, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.
  • Billy Giddeons, of Wallace, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.
  • Don Rawls, of Willard, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.
  • Randy Gordon, of Willard, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.
  • June Robbins, of Burgaw, expressed favor of demolishing the media center to provide students with more space for athletic facilities.

Mr. Lanier thanked those who addressed the Board.

Having reached the end of the agenda, the Board concluded the community meeting at approximately 7:40 p.m.
