Call to Order

At 4:01 p.m., Board Chair Kenneth Lanier called the work session to order.

Reassignment

Transportation Director Darren Lafon presented changed to the draft proposal for school reassignment in the Hampstead area due to the opening of the Surf City area schools. Mr. Lafon said there are no split neighborhoods and the feeder patterns are clean.

Mr. Lanier reminded the Board of its decision to have two public input sessions for the reassignment at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 at South Topsail Elementary and Dec. 5 at North Topsail Elementary.

Mr. George moved to recommend the reassignment plans for the Topsail area schools for adoption by the Board. Don Hall seconded, and the motion carried.

Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill asked if the Board would like the district to collect questions online prior to the input sessions. The Board collectively agreed that this would be a good idea.

Dr. Hill then asked the Board to start thinking about the naming of the Surf City area schools. Mr. Lanier asked if Board members would like to move forward with naming the schools Surf City Elementary School and Surf City Middle School. The Board agreed to add this to the Board Agenda as item 26a: Naming of Surf City Area Schools.

Penderlea School

Dr. Hill shared that there are a few items currently not in the budget for the playground, soccer field, baseball field, or softball field at the Surf City and Penderlea bond projects. Both sites will be graded and seeded. The Town of Surf City has previously offered to partner with the district and the Board directed that conversations needed to take place in order to determine whether that is still an option.

Adjournment

At 4:38 p.m., in a motion made by Rochelle Whiteside, seconded by Brad George, the Board adjourned its work session.
