Call to Order

At 6:15 p.m., Chair Katherine Herring determined a quorum was present and called the Pender County Board of Education Meeting to order.   

Board Agenda

The Board Agenda was presented for review and approval.  It was suggested that an item,”2016-2017 Enrollment and Growth Information” to be included in the “Bid Updates”.  At 6:17 p.m., Brad George motioned, seconded by Rochelle Whiteside, and the Board Agenda with the revision was approved.

Closed Session

At 6:18 p.m., Brad George motioned to move into Closed Session pursuant to N.C. General Statute 143-318.11(a)(1) and (a)(3), and (a)(6), to consider matters related to the employment of individuals, to prevent the disclosure of confidential personnel information under G.S. 115C-319 and-321, and  to consult with the Board’s Attorney in order to preserve the attorney-client privilege.

Open Sesssion

The meeting returned to Open Session at 6:33 p.m.

Human Resource Report

The Human Resource Report was approved with a unanimous vote at 6:35 p.m.

Bid Updates

At 6:36 p.m., Director Allen Vann presented an update on the recent upcoming bids for the Bond projects. A representative with Metcon, Buildings and Infrastructure, shared the latest information and costs for the Penderlea School project.  At 7:18 p.m., a representative with Barnhill Contracting Company, shared a progress report in regards to the Burgaw Middle School, West Pender Middle School, and Cape Fear Elementary/Middle School renovations.  At 7:42 p.m., Barnhill Contracting also brought forth the construction budget and information for the Surf City School.  The Board agreed to come back together on Monday, October 10, 2016. 

2016-2017 Enrollment and Growth Information

At 8:26 p.m., Superintendent Dr. Terri Cobb and Director Dr. Todd Blumenreich reviewed 2016-2017 student enrollment and growth information with the Board.  Historical (20) day enrollment totals were presented.  Capacity tables, future enrollment projections, and student transfers were also brought forth. 


At 8:54 p.m., Board Member Brad George reminded the group of the Topsail High School “Dig Pink” Volley Ball game on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 4:30 p.m.  The game is to raise awareness for breast cancer.  It was announced the next Regular Board of Education Meeting would take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at 6:00 p.m., with a possible Special Board of Education Meeting taking place on Monday, October 10, 2016, at 6:00 p.m.


Board Vice Chair Kenneth Lanier motioned to adjourn at 8:57 p.m.  Board Member Brad George seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.
