7630 Death Benefits, Disability Income And Workers’ Compensation

A. DEATH BENEFITS

The state law governing the retirement system for teacher and state employees provides for a death benefit for the beneficiary of a full-time permanent employee meeting plan criteria. The amount of benefit and eligibility status will be consistent with the plan in effect at the time.

B. DISABILITY INCOME PLAN

The Disability Income Plan of North Carolina provides short- and long-term disability benefits for permanent employees who are members of the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System and who meet certain state service requirements. The plan is administered by the Department of State Treasurer and the retirement system.

C. WORKERS’ COMPENSATION INSURANCE

All school system employees are covered by workers’ compensation insurance pursuant to legal requirements. This insurance provides coverage for medical expenses and reduced pay benefits for employees injured as a result of accidents or occupational diseases arising from and in the course and scope of their employment.

Any employee who is injured on the job must notify his or her supervisor immediately.
