7460 Student Teachers and Internships

The Board believes that student teachers and other interns make a direct, positive contribution to the process of education and that the school system has a professional responsibility to participate in the effective preparation of future educators. Accordingly, the Board will cooperate with accredited colleges and universities that offer licensure programs and provide meaningful internship experiences in the school system.

The Superintendent or designee shall assign interns to experienced individuals identified as likely to make the most effective contribution to the profession through their work withinterns. No intern will be placed without prior approval of the Superintendent or designee. While the supervising educator works with an intern to provide an effective internship experience, the supervising educator shall remain accountable for the quality and extent of student learning and other services.

Interns must follow the policies and procedures of the Board and the Superintendent, as well as those of the school(s) to which they are assigned. Additionally, student teaching interns are expected to carry out all the responsibilities that would be expected of a licensed teacher employed by the school system. The Superintendent shall remove any intern if it is determined that his or her presence is detrimental to the welfare of the students or the school system or he or she is academically unprepared for the internship placement.
