A. GENERAL EMPLOYMENT OF SUBSTITUTES

The school system will employ substitute teachers as deemed appropriate by the administration and in accordance with State Board policies. The board recognizes the importance of employing licensed teachers as substitutes and will give first priority to applicants that hold or have held any teaching license. Applicants with a bachelor or associate degree may be employed as a substitute only if substitutes with a teaching license are not available.  All substitute teachers must attend an orientation.

The Office of Human Resources shall have prepared an adequate list of approved substitute teachers designating their approved fields/subject areas and have it distributed to the respective building principals prior to the opening of the school year. All substitutes shall be selected from this list. The Office of Human Resources shall furnish all principals with updated substitute lists during the year as needed.

A criminal history check will be conducted on applicants for substitute teaching positions in accordance with policy 7100, Recruitment and Selection of Personnel, and administrative procedures.
