4210 Release Of Students From School

4210 RELEASE OF STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

The safety of students is a paramount concern of the board and school system. The principal or designee shall make reasonable efforts to verify that any person appearing at a school and requesting permission to take a student from the school is properly identified before the student is released to him or her.

A student shall not be released to any person without the prior approval of the parent or guardian who has legal responsibility for the student.  For purposes of this policy “parent or guardian who has legal responsibility” for the student includes the biological parent, the adoptive parent, and where applicable, a “caregiver adult” as defined in G.S. 115C-366(h)(2). The student may be released to a parent or guardian, unless the principal has been provided with a copy of a valid court order or agreement that clearly prohibits such release.

If the principal or designee determines that releasing the student will endanger the student, the principal may refuse to release the student and shall contact law enforcement and/or the department of social services as appropriate.
